Female judoka athlete Samo George Georgina, a recipient of the LA 2028 Olympic Games IOC Scholarship through the NOCSI, is making significant strides toward making history. Her recent impressive performance at the Mandurah Oceania Open 2026 in Australia, as reported by the Judo Federation Secretary General, highlights her rising prominence on the international stage.
The 22-year-old secured a bronze medal in the women’s 63kg division on Saturday, further strengthening her bid for qualification to the 2028 Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles, USA.
If she qualifies, Georgina will become the first female judoka from the Solomon Islands to compete at the Olympic Games—a historic milestone for her country.
The tournament saw a total of 73 judokas from 16 countries competing across various weight divisions. Despite financial constraints limiting the Solomon Islands to only two athletes representing the nation, the overall achievement was recognized as a major success for the federation.
Judo Federation Solomon Islands Secretary General, Laven Ronnie Safue, further added “This is a milestone for our federation. Georgina also won a bronze medal at the 2023 Pacific Games, and we are proud to see her continue performing well on the international stage.”
Safue emphasized the federation's ongoing commitment to nurturing local talent, noting that the country has many promising judokas capable of representing Solomon Islands in future regional and international competitions.
He confirmed that Georgina is now among the strongest prospects for Olympic qualification ahead of the 2028 Games.
