THE Solomon Islands Basketball Federation (SIBF) is set to reveal the final Men’s and Women’s squads for the FIBA Melanesian Cup 2025 today, with the Men’s team preparing to move into camp this Sunday.
Men’s Team Manager Tracy Wickham confirmed the announcement during a press conference held yesterday.
Taking on the role as a female manager for the men’s team for the first time, Wickham acknowledged the challenges ahead but expressed confidence in the journey.
“The final listing should be revealed today before the Men’s team moves into camp on Sunday,” Wickham said.
She emphasized the broader goal beyond the tournament itself.
“The objective is to support the players and coaches in qualifying for Tahiti 2027. It’s not only about performing well in the FIBA Melanesian Cup 2025, which will be hosted on home soil for the first time, but also about the long-term goal to qualify for the next Pacific Games. This tournament is the first step.”
Wickham noted the importance of strong support, dedication, and commitment from both the federation and the wider community.
“I’m very proud because this is my first time stepping into a role like this, and I’m really looking forward to the challenges we will face,” she added.
She reflected on her unique position as a female manager for a men’s team.
“I don’t think there’s ever been a female looking after a men’s team before, so this is a very challenging role for me.
“But I see it as more than just a role — my job is to assist the coaches and players.
“We expect a lot of sacrifice from them, and my responsibility is to ensure their commitment is one hundred percent and beyond,” Wickham said.
She stressed the need for continuous support for the players.
“When we expect that level of sacrifice, we need to support them in every way we can. That’s the challenge I feel I will face moving forward.”
Despite the challenges, Wickham praised the team’s focus and attitude.
“I have met with the team, and they are a very good group of boys with top-notch focus on what they are doing. We are looking forward to the upcoming tournament,” she concluded.
