Rising middle-distance runner Stephen Rahuasi of the Solomon Islands is set to make his mark at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo (13–21 September 2025), as he continues his pursuit of new personal bests and national records in the 800m and 1500m.
Rahuasi’s journey into athletics began with a sense of opportunity. “I started competing in the 800m because in the Solomon Islands, no one was interested in it, and that inspired me to take it up,” he explained. That decision quickly paid off, with his breakout performance at the Pacific Mini Games, where he claimed silver and clocked a personal best.
Representing the Solomon Islands and the Pacific is something Rahuasi considers a deep responsibility. “It’s more than just running for me. It’s carrying the pride, strength, and dream of my people every time I step on the track,” he said.
His preparations for Tokyo have been strong, with training blocks leaving him confident and ready. A blend of training with Area Record Holder Peter Bol on the Gold Coast, and ONOC Training Camp in Fukuoka.
Student Athlete life has been both his greatest strength and challenge, balancing his sporting ambitions with academic commitments at the Solomon Islands National University. “Time management and financial support are tough, but it has also been one of my biggest strengths, learning how to balance both sports and academics.”
Looking ahead to the Championships, Rahuasi’s goals are clear: “I want to achieve a personal best and set a national record.” He is also excited about the chance to line up against world-class athletes. “I’m especially looking forward to competing against top runners like Peter Bol and to watch other 800m athletes as well.”
Stephen’s advice for Young Pacific Athletes, his advice is simple: “Believe in yourself, stay consistent, and never be afraid to chase big goals — even if no one else around you is doing it. Work hard, stay dedicated, and always trust in God to guide you along the way.”
